ABINSI JUKUN/TIV CRISIS: COMMISSION OF INQUIRY SUBMITS REPORT

By Jimin Geoffrey

The Commission of Inquiry into the Tiv/Jukun crisis constituted by Governor Samuel Ortom today submitted its report to the Governor.

Chairman of the Commission, Justice W.I. Kpochi stated that the Commission identified land disputes, chieftaincy and leadership struggles among members of the community as major causes of the crisis.

He stated that in the course of their findings, some protagonists within Abinsi and Fiidi were also identified as fuelling the crisis and urged the Benue State government to sanction such persons in accordance with the provisions of the law.

The Commission recommended strict application of the provisions of the Benue State Council of Chiefs and Traditional Councils Law, 2016 and the regulation of land acquisition in accordance with the provisions of the Land Use Act as antidotes to the problems identified.

Governor Samuel Ortom while receiving the report, assured of government’s determination to act promptly on the recommendations of the report with a view to finding lasting solution to the crisis.

He stated that the Jukuns and Tivs in Taraba and Benue State respectively are indigenes of those states and nobody would displace them for whatever reason, adding that the two states had agreed to hasten up boundary demarcations to ensure peaceful coexistence.

According to the Governor, what had bonded the Tivs and Jukuns of the two states is poverty and so there is no justifiable reason for them to destroy one another’s property.

He noted that impunity which had caused lot of insecurity in the country would not be condoned in the state under his administration, stressing that security agents would be made to arrest and prosecute those found culpable in the report.

The report presented was in volumes one to four containing executive summary, findings and recommendations, records of proceedings as well as exhibits and pictures of the scenes at the sites visited respectively.
